In the mid-80s, about 800 mopeds per day left the Simson factory site in Suhl and turned the model into the European market leader. After the German reunification, the disposal numbers decreased dramatically, which – in spite of several rescue efforts – led to the compulsory auction and the end of the Simson Zweirad GmbH in 2002.

With the end of the Simson Zweirad GmbH, a cult was born. Today the East moped has more and more lovers in Germany. The moped’s low purchase cost, robustness and repairability make the young and the young at heart love it. The internet plus the numerous Simson clubs, associations and regulars’ tables provide platforms for the enthusiasts. Every year, the Simson lovers meet at numerous gatherings to celebrate their two-wheelers, hold races, go on round trips and gaze at the babes of others.

Prison or treatment? For most patients of the »Fachklinik am Hils«, a drug rehabilitation clinic, this issue arises before starting the therapy. They are »35ers«. Their life is marked by drug consumption and drug-related crime. For most of them it is not the first therapy, for some it will not be the last.


Düsterntal, a village of fifty souls, is located seventy kilometers south of Hannover. Hidden between pines, oaks and birches lies the former hunting lodge of the sleepy little town, hillside the ridge »Hils«. Since the 90s, forty adult men get a second chance here. A chance for a drug-free life. The patients shall become abstinent during the six-month stay and with the help of various treatments and substitution methods.

Helmut Göldner is one of the last of his kind. For more than 50 years now, he has been offering his mobile cinema in the small communities of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. Always on the move, even in his old age. He builds up his big screen in community halls and restaurants. For how long does Helmut Göldner want to keep it up? »I would like to do my last movie show when I am 100 years old«, he says with a very big grin on his face. His wife would prefer him to quit now, but this is no option for the 66-year-old man. Cinema shows are his great passion.

Since 1986 the Maschseefest in Hannover is one of the famous festivals in northern Germany. People round the lake have fun at day and night. I went there to do a documentation for a Hannover newspaper.

There is a blue-grey cloud other the soccer playing ground. Like agitated ants are the motorcycles crossing the field. One of them is kicking an over-sized football. Since 1956 the Motoball-League in Germany exists. 16 Teams are playing in a north and south territory. It's a very dangerous sport, but not only men are acting there. The only women in the league is the 21 year old Vanessa Fünfstück. She is playing for the MSC Pattensen, a club near Hannover. Since the success of the German women soccer team and the film like "Kick it like beckham", we know that this sport isn't just a man business.

The former flagship-district »Mueßer Holz« in the state capital Schwerin dies off. In the industrialized apartment block colony, shops close down, schools are closed and rows of houses are demolished. Those who can move away.
In 2009, the German national horticultural show is held in Schwerin. The country will invest millions to create a flowery capital city. But the people living in »Mueßer Holz« can´t expect much more than the forthcoming business closures. Not without reason, the residents call their district »the end of the world«.

Paul Betz is the only mobile Quizmaster in Germany. Since six years he is traveling from get togethers for elderly persons, like the big quizmasters in tv shows. His quiz isn't an memory training, the people shall have fun to puzzle over the questions. This is a passion, that Betz shares with the old people.

Hustle and bustle under the glassy roof of the central market Hannover. In the early morning farmers and merchants are placing their goods and are talking to each other. When the first customers arrive bargaining and merchandising starts.
Nearly 400.000t of vegetables and fruits are changing hands every year. The array of fruits range from local asparagus to papayas. All people, coming to the market, want only one thing: fill Hannover's bellies.
